What is Metacognition?
Metacognition allows one to set goals, problem-solve, plan, and monitor and evaluate their own learning processes.
Humans can develop metacognition because:
- we think a lot
- human thinking is fallible and error-prone
- need careful monitoring and regulation
- need to plan ahead and be critical of alternate plans
- want to communicate, explain, and justify thinking to self and others
- make important decisions

Metacognition has two characteristics:
1) the thinker knows something about their own and others' thought processes
2) the thinker can pay attention to and change their own thinking
